Abanindranath Tagore

150th Birth Anniversary of Abanindra Nath Tagore was celebrated on 7th August 2021 for paying tributes to the leading light of the Bengal School of Art.

About Abanindranath Tagore

  • Popularly known as ‘Aban Thakur,’ Abanindranath Tagore (7 August 1871 - 5 December 1951), the nephew of Rabindranath Tagore, was one of the most prominent artists of the Bengal school of art in India.

Bengal Art and Culture

He first created the ‘Indian Society of Oriental Art’ and later went on to establish Bengal School of Art.

  • He developed Indian Style of painting, under the Bengal School of Art. He sought to modernize Moghul and Rajput styles in order to counter the influence of Western models of art. Most of his works revolved around Hindu philosophy.

Famous Paintings

  • “Bharat Mata” painting (1905) was one of the most iconic works of Abanindranath Tagore.
  • His finest achievement was the Arabian Nights series which was painted in 1930.

Literature

  • Some of his books like ‘BudoAngla’, ‘KhirerPutul’ and ‘Rajkahini’ are best examples of Bengali children’s literature.
