It was launched in 2006 with the objective of measuring environmental trends worldwide and providing feedbacks for effective policymaking.

  • It is a joint collaboration between Yale University and Columbia University in association with World Economic Forum.

Rankings

Top five ranked countries in the index are Denmark, Luxembourg, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and France.

  • The 2020 Environmental Performance Index (EPI) ranked 180 countries on 32 performance indicators across eleven issue categories covering environmental health and ecosystem vitality.

Findings related to India

  • India was ranked 168/182, with a score of 27.6 out of 100.
  • India scored below the regional average score on all five key parameters on environmental health, including air quality, sanitation and drinking water, heavy metals and waste management.
  • It has also scored below the regional average on parameters related to biodiversity and ecosystem services too.
