Forum for Decarbonising Transport

NITI Aayog and World Resources Institute India, jointly launched the ‘Forum for Decarbonizing Transport’ in India as part of the NDC-Transport Initiative for Asia project on 23August 2021.

  • It aims at bringing down the peak level of GHG emissions from the transport sector in Asia, resulting in problems like congestion and air pollution.

Need for such a Forum

Government of India has worked continuously towards decarbonisation of road transport, with a major focus on the adoption of electric vehicles in the country, yet the adoption of EVs has not picked up pace. To streamline adoption of Electric Vehicles across the country, there is a need is to create a favourable ecosystem for different stakeholders including Central/state Governments, state-designated agencies, financial institutions, businesses, OEMs, research and technical institutes, private bodies etc. The forum will enable a coordinated effort between these stakeholders.

  • At present, Road transport contributes to more than 90% of the total CO2 emissions of the Transport sector of India. It is a great opportunity to decarbonize India’s urban transport sector and promote walking, cycling and public transport and electrification of motor vehicles to decarbonize the transport sector of India.
