Microplastics in Cuddalore Beach

A combined study of National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research and Periyar University found very high levels of microplastics on the Silver Beach in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu.

Sources of Microplastics on the beach

  • According to the study, untreated sewage, tourism and fishing activities were the sources of the plastic debris. Storm water runoff through the Gadilam River and Wave induced deposition through high tides transported the micro plastic to the beach.

Effects on the Environment

  • Release of Microplastics in the environment harms the ecologically sensitive organisms in the ocean.
  • Bioaccumulation and Bio magnification of microplastics is a cause of concern for the human population, which induces metabolic disturbances, neurotoxicity, and increased cancer risk.
