NIPUN Bharat Initiative

The Ministry of Education launched a National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN).

Aim

  • It aims that every child in the country attains foundational literacy and numeracy by the end of Grade 3, by 2026-27. It will cover children under the age of 3-9 years.
  • The aim is in line with the objective of National Education Policy 2020, which has laid down that attaining foundational literacy and numeracy for all children must become an immediate national mission.

Implementation

  • It will be implemented through a five-tier implementation mechanism to be set up at the National – State – District – Block – School level in all States and UTs, under the Samagra Shiksha Scheme.
  • A special package for foundational literacy and Numeracy under NISHTHA (National Initiative for School Heads and Teachers Holistic Advancement) is being developed by NCERT. It will be a capacity building program for Improving Quality of School Education through Integrated Teacher Training.

Expected Outcomes

  • Holistic development of the child by focusing on different domains of development like physical and motor development, socio-emotional development, literacy and numeracy development, cognitive development, life skills etc. This will reduce the dropout rate while improving quality of education through activity based learning.
  • Making the learning trajectory steeper, thereby improving employment opportunities.
  • Empowering teachers through intensive capacity building.
  • It will benefit socio-economic disadvantageous group, thus ensuring access to equitable and inclusive quality education.
