Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin

  • It is a restructured form of Indira Awas Yojana, launched in 1996 to address housing needs of the rural areas. It was launched in 2016, with the aim of ensuring ‘Housing For All’ by 2022. It is a centrally sponsored scheme which comes under the ambit of Ministry of Rural Development.
  • According to the data by the rural development ministry, out of the allocated target of 2.63 crore till financial year 2021-22, only 1.51 crore houses have been constructed including 33.9 lakh houses built during 2020-21. As per the target (Housing for all by 2022), the speed seems slow.
  • Some of the biggest issues with PMAY (G) are fund crunch, low-cost land availability, maintenance issues etc. To overcome, measures like adopting practical targets, fastening land acquittal, ensuring sustainability in projects etc. could be adopted.
