Super Year for Biodiversity

The year 2020 was declared as Super Year for Biodiversity by the United Nations, as the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity with 20 global Aichi targets adopted in 2010 ended in 2020.

Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020

  • It was adopted by Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, as a ten-year framework for 2011–2020. It seeks action by all countries and stakeholders to safeguard biodiversity and the benefits it provides to people.
  • As part of the Strategic Plan 20 ambitious but realistic targets, known as the Aichi Biodiversity Targets, were adopted. In support of the Aichi Targets, the Governments also committed to establishing national targets.

Aim

  • It sought effective and urgent action to halt the loss of biodiversity in order to ensure that by 2020 ecosystems are resilient and continue to provide essential services, thereby securing the planet’s variety of life, and contributing to human well-being, and poverty eradication.
