National Energy Storage Mission

Ministry of New & Renewable Energy prepared draft for setting up National Energy Storage Mission (NESM) for India with an objective to strive for leadership in energy storage sector by creating an enabling policy and regulatory framework that encourages manufacturing, deployment, innovation and further cost reduction.

• NITI Aayog and Rocky Mountain Institute’s joint report on India’s Energy Storage Mission has proposed three stage solution approach i.e. creating an environment for battery manufacturing growth; scaling supply chain strategies; and scaling of battery cell manufacturing.

Significance

• The Mission will drive mobility solutions that will bring in significant benefits to the industry, economy, and country. The Mission will lay down the strategy and roadmap which will enable India to leverage upon its size and scale to develop a competitive domestic manufacturing ecosystem for electric mobility.
• The actions in this regard will benefit all citizens as the aim is to promote ‘Ease of Living’ and enhance the quality of life of Indian citizens and also provide employment opportunities through ‘Make-in India’ across a range of skill sets.
