Inland Vessels Bill 2021
On 16th June, 2021, the Union Cabinet gave nod to the Inland Vessels Bill, 2021.
- The bill, which will replace the Inland Vessels Act, 1917, aims at streamlining vessels running on inland waterways in the country.
Objectives
- To bring uniformity in the application of the law relating to inland waterways and navigation within the country
- To strengthen procedures governing the inland vessels, their construction, survey, registration, manning and navigation.
Need
- Under-utilised Freight Transportation: India has an extensive network of inland waterways in the form of rivers, canals, backwaters and creeks. Despite this, freight transportation by waterways is highly under-utilised in India compared ....
