Odisha plans to create Natural Barriers to Cyclonic Storms
Recently, the Odisha government proposed to take up mangrove and casuarina plantation along its coast with the aim to create natural barriers to cyclonic storms. The initiative draws inspiration from the exceptional protection that the state’s mangroves have offered during major cyclonic events.
Key Highlights
- The state has around 480 km long coastal belt. The mangrove forests will be raised along the coast under the Integrated Coastal Zone Management Project (ICZMP) Phase-II.
- Odisha currently has 220 sq. km. of mangrove forests. Most of it is found in Kendrapara, around the Bhitarkanika National Park.
