IUCN Red List 2026 Update

Recently, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) released the updated IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, highlighting that over half of the world's hydrothermal vent molluscs are threatened by deep-sea mining.

  • The updated IUCN Red List now includes 175,909 species, of which 49,505 are classified as threatened with extinction.
  • Around 62% (125 out of 201) endemic hydrothermal vent mollusc species are threatened due to deep-sea mining.
  • Lirapex felix, a deep-sea snail found in the Indian Ocean, has been listed as Critically Endangered due to mining exploration.
