Parrot Bornavirus-4 (PaBV-4)

In July 2026, scientists reported the first identification and genetic characterisation of Parrot Bornavirus-4 (PaBV-4) in captive psittacine birds in India, raising concerns over the health of exotic pet birds and conservation of threatened parrot species.

  • The virus causes Proventricular Dilatation Disease (PDD), a largely fatal disease affecting the digestive and nervous systems of parrots and related birds.
