Bougainville Votes to Become World’s Newest Country
Bougainville, an island in the Pacific, held a referendum to decide if it wants to remain a part of Papua New Guinea or become an independent country.
Result of the Referendum
- According to the result, voters backing Bougainville’s independence from Papua New Guinea won a landslide referendum victory.
- The historic vote caps a decades-long peace process and a long recovery from a brutal civil war between Bougainville rebels, Papua New Guinea security forces and foreign mercenaries that ended in 1998.
