Cabinet approves increasing strength of Supreme Court Judges from 31 to 34
Against the backdrop of rising cases in the Supreme Court, President of India has given assent to the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill 2019 to increase the strength of judges in the top court from the present 31 to 34, including the Chief Justice of India. At present, the sanctioned strength of the apex court is 31.
Procedure
The 2019 act amends the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956 to give effect to the change. It was last amended in 2009 to increase the judges’ strength from 25 to 30 (excluding the CJI).
