Biodiversity Governance

  • Three-tier biodiversity governance structure:
    • National: National Biodiversity Authority (NBA)
    • State/UT: State Biodiversity Boards (SBBs) and Union Territory Biodiversity Councils (UTBCs)
    • Local: Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs)

Legal & Policy Framework

  • Biological Diversity Act, 2002 (amended in 2023) serves as India's principal biodiversity legislation.
  • National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP 2024–2030) aligned with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF).
  • India submitted:
    • Seventh National Report (NR-7) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
    • First National Report (NR-1) on implementation of the Nagoya Protocol.

Forests & Protected Areas

  • Total forest and tree cover: 8.27 lakh sq km.
