Tigalari Script

On 15th June 2026, the Ministry of Ayush organised a capacity-building workshop on the transliteration of Ayurveda manuscripts written in Tigalari and Old Kannada scripts in Udupi (Karnataka) under the Gyan Bharatam Mission.

What is Tigalari?

  • Brahmic Script: igalari is a Southern Brahmic script which was used to write Tulu, Kannada, and Sanskrit languages.
  • Vedic Texts: It was primarily used for writing Vedic texts in Sanskrit.
  • Evolution: It evolved from the Grantha script.
  • Oldest Record: The oldest record of the usage of this script found in a stone inscription at the Sri Veeranarayana temple in Kulashekara here is ....
