Megalithic Site of Chokahatu
Recently, researchers and local groups renewed efforts to secure UNESCO World Heritage status for the megalithic site of Chokahatu in Jharkhand.
Brief Description of Megalithic Site of Chokahatu
- Munda’s Burial Site: It is burial complexes associated with the traditions of the Munda people.
- Location: It is located in the Bundu-Sonahatu region of Ranchi district.
- Etymology: The name Chokahatu is derived from the Austric Mundari language and means “a place of mourning.”
- Antiquity: According to Munda folklore, the community settled in the region more than 2,800 years ago and brought their megalithic traditions with them.
