In July 2026, the traditional Jodhpur Mojari footwear craft, also known as Jodhpur Juttis,was awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

Origin and History

  • Traditional Craft Community:The craft is traditionally associated with the Jingar community, known for making saddles, leather sheaths and other leather goods for armies.
  • Transition to Shoemaking:Around 250 years ago, the community gradually shifted from saddle making to Mojari production, which became their primary occupation.
  • Royal Patronage:Once patronised by the royal families of Marwar, Mojari evolved into a distinctive symbol of Jodhpur's cultural heritage.
