Shabdalok: India's First Immersive Language Museum
On 19th July 2026, the Union Home Minister inaugurated the first phase of the Museum of Word, also known as Shabdalokin Kolkata(west Bengal).
What is Shabdlok?
- Language Musuem: Shabdalok (Museum of Words) is India's first immersive language museum, developed by the Ministry of Culture at the National Library campus, Kolkata.
- Location: Housed in the historic Belvedere House, which has served as the National Library since 1948, the museum celebrates India's rich linguistic and literary heritage through interactive, technology-enabled exhibits.
Objectives
- To showcase India's linguistic diversity and evolution of languages.
- To demonstrate how language shapes culture and preserves traditions across generations.
