GI Recognition for Indigenous Crafts and Cultural Heritage

In June 2026, several traditional products from different states received Geographical Indication (GI) status from the Geographical Indications (GI) Registry, Government of India, thereby strengthening efforts to preserve indigenous crafts and cultural heritage.

Gujarat

Jasdan Patari Handicraft

  • Originating from Jasdan, near Rajkot, these unique handicrafts consist of teakwood chests embellished with intricate metalwork, primarily brass and copper.
  • The craft distinguishes between larger chests known as pataras and smaller ones called pataris.
