​Greenhouse Gas Levels Reach Record High in 2023

On 28th October 2024, a report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) revealed that greenhouse gas levels surged to unprecedented heights in 2023, with an alarming increase of over 10% in carbon dioxide (CO2) levels over the past two decades.

Key Findings

  • Record Concentrations: The globally averaged surface concentration of CO2 reached 420 parts per million (ppm) in 2023. Methane (CH₄) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) concentrations also hit record levels at 1,934 parts per billion (ppb) and 336.9 ppb, respectively.
  • Comparison to Pre-Industrial Levels: These concentrations are significant, representing 151%, 265%, and 125% of pre-industrial levels (before 1750) for CO2, methane, ....
