On 2nd December 2024, India’s 57th tiger reserve was approved at Madhya Pradesh's Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary, marking a significant step in the country's conservation efforts.
What is a Tiger Reserve?
- A tiger reserve is a designated area created to conserve tigers and their habitats as part of India’s Project Tiger initiative launched in 1973.
- These reserves consist of a core area, which is legally protected as a national park or sanctuary, and a buffer zone where both forest and non-forest lands are managed for conservation and sustainable use.
