India-Ethiopia Relations Elevated to Strategic Partnership

On 16-17 December 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Ethiopia on his first bilateral visit, during which India and Ethiopia elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership, marking a new phase in bilateral cooperation.

  • India and Ethiopia share over 2,000 years of historical ties, dating back to the Axumite Empire and Indian Ocean trade networks.
  • Formal diplomatic relations were established in 1950.
  • Ethiopia is a key African partner for India as:
    • Host of the African Union Headquarters
    • Member of BRICS
    • Influential voice in the Global South
  • The relationship spans trade, investment, development cooperation, education, defence and multilateral diplomacy.
