India-Ethiopia Relations Elevated to Strategic Partnership
On 16-17 December 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Ethiopia on his first bilateral visit, during which India and Ethiopia elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership, marking a new phase in bilateral cooperation.
About India-Ethiopia Relations
- India and Ethiopia share over 2,000 years of historical ties, dating back to the Axumite Empire and Indian Ocean trade networks.
- Formal diplomatic relations were established in 1950.
- Ethiopia is a key African partner for India as:
- Host of the African Union Headquarters
- Member of BRICS
- Influential voice in the Global South
- The relationship spans trade, investment, development cooperation, education, defence and multilateral diplomacy.
