HC Upholds Forest Rights Claims of the Tharu Community

In April 2026, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court (HC) set aside a district-level committee’s decision to reject the community forest rights claims of the Tharu tribe in Lakhimpur Kheri (Uttar Pradesh).

Forest Rights Act (FRA), 2006

Officially known as the Scheduled Tribes and Other Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, it is a people-centric law for forests, which recognises the rights of forest-dwelling communities to use and manage forest resources.
