SC Expands Prison Reforms Panel Role to Safeguard Rights of Disabled Prisoners

On 21st April 2026, the Supreme Court, in Sathyan Naravoor v. Union of India & Ors., directed the High-Powered Committee to prepare a comprehensive action plan to strengthen safeguards for prisoners with disabilities and ensure access to assistive devices across prisons.

  • The committee was constituted by the Supreme Court in February 2026 in the case Suhas Chakma v. Union of India, 2026, and is chaired by former Supreme Court judge Justice S. Ravindra Bhat.
