Answer: Around 31% of total population of India lives in urban areas. Comparing to the rural region, urban India contributes approximately 2/3 to India's GDP.
- However, with increasing pressure in urban areas due to rural to urban migration for jobs & employment and also due to population growth, congestion in cities of India has been rising. Congestion during peak hours in four major cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata — costs the economy Rs 1.47 lakh crores annually.
