Spain Joins Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative
On 21st January 2026, Spain formally joined the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) and strengthened its bilateral ties with India, signalling deeper maritime and strategic engagement amid a changing global order.
What is the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI)?
- Launched: In 2019 by India.
- Objective: Promote a free, open, inclusive, and rules-based Indo-Pacific.

- Maritime security
- Sustainable use of marine resources
- Disaster risk reduction
- Maritime ecology
- Capacity building and cooperation
- IPOI complements India’s broader Indo-Pacific vision and works alongside regional and multilateral frameworks.
