Steel Slag: Transforming Industrial Waste into a Strategic Resource

On 20th January 2026, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology recommended the use of steel slag-based technology for sustainable road construction, particularly in difficult and hilly terrains.

What is Steel Slag?

  • Steel slag is a by-product of steel production.
  • It is formed during the conversion of pig iron into steel.
  • The slag initially occurs as a molten liquid and is a complex solution of silicates and oxides that solidifies upon cooling.
  • The calcined lime used as a fluxing agent and combines with the silicates, aluminum oxides, magnesium oxides and ferrites to form steel slag.
