WEF Expands IR 4.0 Ecosystem
On 22nd January 2026, the World Economic Forum (WEF) announced to establish five new Centres for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR), including centres in France, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and India (Andhra Pradesh).
What is the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0)?
- IR 4.0 describes the current era marked by the convergence of digital, physical, and biological technologies, including artificial intelligence, robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and quantum computing.
- Unlike earlier revolutions, IR 4.0 is blurring boundaries between physical, digital and biological systems.
- The term was coined by Klaus Schwab, founder of the WEF, in 2016.
