Snakebites: A Neglected Healthcare Problem in India
- Snakebite is a neglected tropical disease (NTD). It is found mainly in South and South-East Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
- In 2017, the World Health Organization (WHO) included snakebite in its list of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD).
- In India, snakebite is a serious health problem. Between 2000 and 2019, about 12 lakh people died due to snakebite in India. Also, about 28 lakh cases of snakebite are reported every year in India.
- India has over 300 species and subspecies of snakes, out of which 50 are venomous.
