India Adds Three New Ramsar Sites
On 14th August 2024, Union Environment Minister announced the designation of three new Ramsar sites in Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh. With the new additions, India's total number of Ramsar sites has increased to 85.
- The newly designated Ramsar sites include the Nanjarayan Bird Sanctuary and Kazhuveli Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu, along with the Tawa Reservoir in Madhya Pradesh, reflecting a significant expansion in India's network of internationally important wetlands.
- Ramsar sites (Wetlands of International Importance), recognized under the Ramsar Convention, are crucial wetlands that provide essential ecological functions such as climate regulation, water purification, and habitat for diverse species.
