Circular Economy and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)

India’s shift towards a circular economy is critical to manage growing urbanization and consumption. A key driver is Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which makes producers accountable for their products' end-of-life. Initially introduced for plastic waste in 2016, EPR has now been expanded to include e-waste, plastic packaging, batteries, and tyres.

Recent Developments

  • In December 2024, the government released draft rules for EPR on new waste categories, including packaging made from paper, glass, metal, and sanitary products.
  • In July 2025, EPR rules were finalized for 18 products containing non-ferrous metals like aluminum, copper, and zinc.
