Flash Droughts

  • Flash droughts are rapidly developing drought events that can intensify within days or weeks due to rainfall deficits, high temperatures, rapid soil moisture loss, and high atmospheric water demand.
  • A recent study analysed flash drought patterns in Maharashtra over 44 years (1981–2024) and found that the risk is concentrated in specific regional hotspots rather than showing a uniform state-wide trend.
  • Ahilyanagar, Beed, Dharashiv, Sangli and Solapur emerged as the most vulnerable hotspots, showing high flash drought severity and rapid intensification rates exceeding 9% per eight-day period.
