East Asia Summit 2019

On 4 November 2019, 14th East Asia Summit (EAS) was held in Thailand during the 35th ASEAN Summit. At the East-Asia Summit, Indian Prime Minister proposed the Indo-Pacific Initiative for a safe and secure maritime domain. This indicates that India is ready to play a bigger role in the region where China has been pushing its military assertiveness.

Indo-Pacific Initiative

  • The main objective of the initiative is to achieve safe, secure and a stable maritime domain.
  • It aims to achieve this by creating partnerships among interested states by sustainably using marine resources.
  • To take the initiative forward, India will organize Indo-Pacific Conclave in Chennai in 2020.
  • Japan, Australia and Thailand support the initiative already. Many more ASEAN countries are expected to express their support to the initiative in the near future.
