Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN)

The initiative was launched in 2015 with the aim of tapping the talent pool of scientists and entrepreneurs internationally to encourage their engagement with the institutes of Higher Education in India so as to augment the country’s existing academic resources, accelerate the pace of quality reform, and elevate India’s scientific and technological capacity to global standards.

  • It was launched by MoHRD and IIT Kharagpur is the nodal institution and national coordinator of this flagship scheme.
  • It provides for participation of foreign faculty as Distinguished / Adjunct / Visiting faculty / Professors of Practice, etc. in delivering Short or Semester-long Courses in IITs, IIMs, Central Universities, IISc Bangalore, IISERs, NITs and IIITs and subsequently cover good State Universities.

Impacting Research Innovation and Technology (IMPRINT) India

  • It was launched in 2015 by MoHRD, supported by all IITs and IISc to address the major science and engineering challenges that India must champion to enable, empower and embolden the nation for inclusive growth and self-reliance.
  • The initiative has two-fold mandate:
    • Developing new engineering education policy
    • Creating a road map to pursue engineering challenges
  • 10 technology domains namely health care, energy, sustainable habitat, Nano-technology hardware, water resources and river systems, advanced materials, Information and Communication Technology, manufacturing, security and defence, and environmental science and climate change have been selected to invite proposals for research.
  • By Dec. 2019, approx. 2600 proposals in the above domains have been received.
