National Plan for Polluted Rivers
- To check river pollution, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has constituted a central monitoring committee to undertake a national initiative to make rivers pollution free.
Need of the Committee
- In Himachal Pradesh, Sukhna, Markanda, Sirsa, Ashwani, stretches of Beas, Giri and Pabbar are found to be polluted and identified as ‘critically polluted’, where the ‘biological oxygen demand’ levels of rivers are above permissible limits and are in worst condition.
- NGT made it clear that having given due consideration to the serious issue and inadequacy of success achieved so far, the tribunal found it necessary to constitute a central monitoring committee.
