Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary: India’s 100th Ramsar Site

On 5th June 2026, Prime Minister announced the inclusion of Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary (Surha Tal), Uttar Pradesh, as India's 100th Ramsar Site, highlighting India's commitment to wetland conservation.

  • India now possesses the highest number of Ramsar Sites in Asia and ranks 3rd globally, trailing only behind the United Kingdom (176 sites) and Mexico (144 sites).

Surha Tal

  • Location: Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Type of Wetland: A natural perennial oxbow lake that serves as an important wintering ground for migratory birds along the Central Asian Flyway.
  • Area: Created in 1991 by consolidating land from 45 villages, covering about 3,432.93 hectares. ....
