India assumes Presidency of UNSC
On 1st August, 2021, India assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of August. The country began its two-year tenure as a non-permanent member of the UNSC in January 2021.
India’s UNSC Presidency
- This will be India’s first presidency during its 2021-22 tenure as a non-permanent member of the Security Council. In this capacity, India will:
- Decide UNSC’s agenda for the month and coordinate important meetings on a wide range of issues.
- Organise key events in three major areas of maritime security, peacekeeping and counter-terrorism.
- Organise many important meetings on issues relating to Syria, Iraq, Somalia, Yemen, ....
