It is projected that 20% of Indian Population would be above 60 years of age by 2050. Assess the preparedness of India by listing down the issues faced by elderly in India and measures taken by government to address them.
Answer: According to the 2011 Census, there are 104 million elderly persons (aged 60 years or above) in India and this is touted to touch 350 million by 2050. Increased dependency ratio is direct outcome of increased population of old age people. The challenges old age population is facing presently in the country are as follows:
- Lack of Care and Poor health: Elderly face psychological issues, trauma of being in isolation mainly because of rising nuclear family system. Rising incidences of non-communicable diseases and lack of trained geriatric professionals are other major problems.
