Answer: The Home Minister of India cited Nehru-Liaquat pact to defend the recent amendments in Citizenship Act recently. Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 grants citizenship to six persecuted religious minorities (Sikhs, Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, Christians and Parsis) from three neighboring countries (Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan).
Nehru-Liaquat Pact
- It was an agreement that was signed in the presence of Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru and Prime Minster of Pakistan, Liaquat Ali Khan to ensure that minority rights in both countries are protected.
- The pact was signed in Delhi, 1950. Hence is also known as Delhi Pact.
