SC Upholds Validity Section 6A of Citizenship Act,1955
On 17th October, 2024, in a landmark verdict, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, 1955, which granted citizenship to immigrants who entered Assam before March 24, 1971.
About the Case
- The petitioners include the NGO Assam Public Works, the Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha, and others who claim that setting a different cut-off date for citizenship in Assam is a discriminatory practice.
