Gorkhaland Issue

On 22nd August 2026, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) convened a tripartite meeting with the West Bengal Government and Gorkha community leaders in Siliguri (West Bengal).

  • Subsequently, the Union Government constituted a committee headed by Pankaj Kumar Singh to draft an agreement and finalise modalities for a “permanent political solution” to the Gorkhaland issue within the Constitutional framework.
  • The committee will examine governance, financial assistance and the roadmap for granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to 11 Gorkha communities.
