Sujalam Bharat Data Policy: Strengthening Rural Drinking Water Governance

On 20th August 2026, the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) issued the Policy on Data Sharing, Interoperability and Stakeholder Access under Sujalam Bharat Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).

  • The policy seeks to create a common digital framework for managing rural drinking-water information and improving service delivery.

Key Features of the Policy

Data Interoperability

  • Common identifiers, standardised metadata and interoperable registries will enable seamless exchange of information.
  • This can connect data on water sources, pipelines, quality, maintenance and service delivery.

Decentralised Governance

  • Gram Panchayats can use reliable data for evidence-based planning, asset monitoring and participatory water governance.
