Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026

On 12th August 2026, the Parliament passed the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026, paving the way for the State of Kerala to be officially renamed “Keralam”.

  • The alteration of a State’s name is governed by Article 3 of the Constitution, which empowers Parliament to form new States or alter the area, boundaries or names of existing States.
  • A Bill for changing the name of a State: Requires the prior recommendation of the President for introduction in Parliament.
  • Must be referred by the President to the concerned State Legislature for expressing its views.
