India’s Fertilizer Subsidy Burden and Sustainability Concerns
Recently, government officials stated that India’s fertilizer subsidy bill is expected to cross Rs. 3 lakh crore in FY 2026–27 if the ongoing West Asia crisis persists, significantly exceeding the budgeted allocation of Rs. 1.71 lakh crore. Rising global prices of natural gas, fertilizers, and crude oil have increased subsidy burdens and exposed India’s dependence on imported fertilizer inputs. The situation has renewed focus on the need for sustainable fertilizer use that balances agricultural productivity, fiscal sustainability, and environmental protection.
