Global Pandemic Treaty: A Milestone in International Health Diplomacy
On 16th April 2025, after over three years of negotiations, member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) reached a draft agreement for a legally binding treaty aimed at improving pandemic preparedness and response.
- This landmark treaty is expected to be ratified at the upcoming World Health Assembly.
Key Elements of the Draft Agreement
- Pathogen Access & Benefit Sharing: The treaty includes a system for equitable sharing of vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics during pandemics. Participating manufacturers are required to allocate 10% of their production to the WHO, with another 10% provided at affordable prices.
