Padma Barrage Project
Recently, Bangladesh approved the Padma Barrage Project, a major river engineering initiative on the Padma River (the Bangladesh stretch of the Ganga) in Rajbari district.
- The project aims to address water scarcity and drought conditions in southwestern Bangladesh, which have been linked to reduced dry-season flows following the construction of the Farakka Barrage in India.
- Reduced downstream flows after the Farakka Barrage have been a recurring concern for Bangladesh, leading to negotiations and the signing of the India-Bangladesh Ganga Water Sharing Treaty.
