U.S. Sanctions on ICC Officials

On 18th August 2026, the U.S. has sanctioned two senior International Criminal Court (ICC) officials, including ICC President Tomoko Akane, escalating its opposition to the court’s jurisdiction over officials from non-member states.

What is the ICC?

  • Established: The ICC was created under the Rome Statute, adopted in 1998 and entering into force in 2002.
  • Headquarters: The court is headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands.
  • Mandate: It investigates and prosecutes individuals accused of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
  • Complementarity: The ICC acts when a country does not, cannot or is unwilling to prosecute serious international crimes.
