India-Japan Deepen Maritime and Defence Cooperation

On 20th August 2026, India and Japan signed a Memorandum of Arrangement (MoA) on Maritime Security Cooperation and agreed to expand operational, naval and defence-industrial cooperation.

What was Agreed?

  • Maritime Security: India and Japan will strengthen cooperation between the Indian Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF).
  • Information Sharing: Both sides will enhance Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) and exchange relevant information.
  • Naval Exercises: The countries will expand the scope and complexity of bilateral naval and military exercises.
  • Logistics Support: They will work towards reciprocal access to ports, maintenance and ship-repair facilities.
