Global Healthcare Sanitation Crisis

On 18th August 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) released global estimates on sanitation services in healthcare facilities, revealing that only 40% of healthcare facilities worldwide met basic sanitation standards in 2025, while 11% had no sanitation services at all.

What are Basic Sanitation Services?

  • Staff Toilet: At least one usable toilet must be dedicated to staff.
  • Sex-Separated Toilet: At least one toilet must be separated by sex and include menstrual hygiene facilities.
  • Accessibility: At least one toilet must be accessible to people with limited mobility.
